Two To-Do Tuesday: Voting and LGBTQ+ Student Rights

Action Items

Protect the Right to Vote and Fair Representation

On April 29th, the Supreme Court handed down a ruling that further diminishes the Voting Rights Act. The ruling effectively invalidates Section 2, which sought to protect the voting rights of people of color and block discriminatory electoral rules. Please call your representatives and demand they take action to protect our voting rights and fair representation in Congress.

Here's Your Script

"My name is [insert]. I'm a constituent from Fishers, and my address is [insert]. I'm calling to express my concern about the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act and allowing states to deny minority populations fair representation. I ask that [legislator's name] speak out against this clearly political attack on our democracy and work to protect our constitutional rights, not decimate them."

Oppose Attacks on LGTBQ+ Students

The Parental Rights Over the Education and Care of Their Kids Act (H.R. 2616) would require all schools receiving federal funding to get parental approval before changing a child's gender markers, pronouns, or preferred name on any school form or sex-based accommodations, including locker rooms or bathrooms.

The Say No To Indoctrination Act (H.R. 2617) has been incorporated into the previous bill. This bill amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to codify Trump's 2025 executive order that defined sex as a biological binary. It would also block federal funding from schools that discuss gender expression or sexual orientation. The mere acknowledgement of an LGTBQ+ student or teacher's identity would disqualify them from federal funding.

This pair of bills amounts to a national "Don't Say Gay" law that would put vulnerable LGBTQ+ students at risk of harm. Call your representative and demand that they opposed this dangerous legislation.

"My name is [insert]. I'm a constituent from Fishers, and my address is [insert]. I'm calling to urge Rep. Spartz to oppose H.R. 2616 and H.R. 2617. These bills will endanger vulnerable LGBTQ+ students and unfairly punish schools and parents for protecting these students' privacy and safety."
