The Democratic State Convention Needs Your Voice in 2026

Behind every statewide nominee is a room full of delegates. In 2026, Indiana Democrats will once again gather to decide who represents them on the ballot. Our HamCo Dems Vice Chair has attended these conventions and offers insight, tips, and reasons why you should consider becoming one of the state party delegates.

Ever wondered how we ended up with Micah Beckwith as Lt. Governor? Look no further than the party state conventions. Every two years, both parties gather to formally select statewide candidates. And yes, Micah was chosen directly by delegates at the GOP State Convention. Braun didn’t want him any more than the Hamilton East Public Library Board did, but Republican delegates had the final say.

So what does that have to do with our Democratic State Convention?

Everything.

If you care about who becomes Indiana’s next Secretary of State, Comptroller, or Treasurer, you have the power to help choose them. How? By running to be a Democratic State Convention Delegate and casting your vote at the convention.

I’ve attended three Indiana Democratic State Conventions in person and even one Democratic National Convention, so here are my tips:

1. Get your name on the ballot early! File a CAN-37 – Declaration of Candidacy for Precinct Committeeperson or State Convention Delegate in 2026. You can also let us know about your interest by completing this form. We'll be sure to follow up with additional information and reminders to complete your CAN-37. Don't wait. In 2022 there was a huge snowstorm the week filings were due. Many of us missed the deadline, and while I was eventually able to serve as an appointed delegate, we cannot assume that will be an option this year.
   

2. Tell your friends and let your network know you're running. This is kind of a big deal! The more Democrats in the room, the stronger our convention becomes. Plus maybe some in your network will want to join you in running. This is your party. Your voice matters.
   

3. Get to know the candidates. Attend meetings, fundraisers, and webinars, and follow the statewide candidates on socials. Several candidates have already announced their intent to run. This is the perfect time to learn more about who they are and understand your "why" before casting your delegate vote.
   

4. Connect with Constituency Caucuses. The INDems have nine caucuses, each with breakout rooms during the convention. Candidates and electeds will visit with the caucuses prior to the official vote. Here's a quick list and contact info of Constituency Caucuses. In Hamilton County, we proudly have our own Young Dems chapter you can connect with before the convention!
   

5. Plan your lunch. Lunch is on your own during the convention, but downtown Indy has plenty of options within walking distance. This is a great moment to meet other Dems from across the state and connect with fellow HamCo delegates!
   

6. Consider attending the Hoosier Hospitality Dinner. This event is the night before the convention and is a highlight of the weekend. In the past there's been a big-name speaker and a lovely dinner. We will share ticket info as soon as it's available. We'd love to have a big HamCo showing!
   

7. Don't be intimidated. State Conventions are a reminder that we are not alone. There are 92 county parties working together to make Indiana better. State Convention energizes us, aligns us, and fuels our summer canvassing season.
